Meet the JCC Tennis Professionals

  • David  Cobabe — Teaches group and private lessons for children, and private lessons for adults. He’s here at the JCC on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.  If you’re a JCC member and you’re new to the tennis program, you can schedule a complimentary 30-minute tennis evaluation with David — he’ll talk with you about your goals, evaluate your tennis level, and then schedule group or private lessons for you, and/or try to help you find a JCC tennis buddy.
  • Rachel Gyves – Tennis has been Rachel’s sport of choice since being young and she has played continuously into her mature years! Rachel feels passionate that tennis can enhance everyone’s life: “It’s very sociable, keeps you in tip top condition by utilizing all muscles in the body, can be played all year round both inside and outside and is, most of all, fun.” Whether a beginner or a pro, child or adult, Rachel uses aspects of the sport to help it interesting, stimulating and enhance any current game by raising fitness levels to another level.
  • Mary Ryniewicz  – Coached college tennis at UCSC and co-coached at Cabrillo Jr. College. She also represented Northern California in intersectional competition, a national event held in Florida and Texas; has been a captain and competitor on numerous USTA Women’s 5.0 & 5.5 teams; and is nationally ranked in the top 10 of Women’s Senior 35’s & 40’s. Mary says, “I am excited to be a part of the APJCC team teaching tennis!  My philosophy of teaching is to ensure my students improve while having fun. Helping to set goals while instilling confidence and love of the game. I truly enjoy helping students discover the positive aspects of the psychological game as well as the physical. I pay attention to everyone feeling comfortable and safe along with adjusting to any limitations one might have. I look forward to having some fun on the court with all skill levels from beginner to advanced.”
  • Rebecca Wheeler – Has been coaching and teaching tennis for 30 plus years.  She is passionate about teaching tennis! She started her career coaching high school tennis which she taught for 15 years.  Her most successful job was coaching Menlo high  school winning the league 3 successive times.  Rebecca then graduated to the junior college level and coached and taught at Mission college for 4 years, both boy’s and girl’s. She enjoy teaching all age groups, and enjoys coaching adult USTA leagues.

Tennis Policies

Missed classes:  Students can make up missed classes within a session but cannot carry them over to the next session. No prorating unless approved by the Tennis Department. We will make every effort to make up sessions missed due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

Classes/times/fees published in the JCC Program Guide are subject to change.

If a minimum number of students is not met, classes may be cancelled and students will be offered classes on alternate days/times.

During the session, if there is ever a day when there is only one student, then he or she will be offered a private lesson lasting half the usual length of the class (for example, if the class is usually one hour, the private lesson would be half an hour). If there are only two students, the class will be shortened to a semi-private lesson of the appropriate length, at the instructor’s discretion.

For complete information on JCC tennis policies, see  the Tennis Department Policies and Procedures.
