Topic for October 26: “No Place on Earth”
Join Jan Masters for conversation and movie review. Your homework and the recommended movie is “No Place on Earth,” a 2012 documentary film written and directed by Janet Tobia based on Esther Stermer’s memoir “We Fight to Survive.” The movie can be found on YouTube, Netflix, and other streaming services.
The human will to survive can lead to unimaginable acts of endurance. “No Place on Earth” tells another tale of endurance by chronicling the experiences of 38 Ukrainian Jews who literally went underground to escape Nazi persecution.
In 1993, caving enthusiast Chris Nicola visited Ukraine to explore the Verteba and Priest’s Grotto caves, and found evidence that they had recently been inhabited by humans. After discovering that the caves were used by three Jewish families (Stermer, Dodyk, and Wexler), comprising 38 people, led by matriarch Esther Stermer (1888–1983), escaping the Holocaust, he embarked on a decade-long quest to find survivors.
