Russian Jews of Silicon Valley

Our Russian Language programming is run by Rabbi Ilana Baird. Rabbi Ilana has served Jewish communities in Russia, Germany, Israel, and the United States.  She founded a liberal synagogue in Haifa and is a graduate of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion’s Israeli Rabbinical Seminary program. Club Mitzvah at Congregation Shir Hadash

Rabbi PJ Schwartz will lead a discussion on “Why Our People Are the ‘People of the Book’? What books do we have?”. The children will also get to observe Sunday school prayer as well as participate in a scavenger hunt and art classes! More information on our children’s programs can be found below.

New! “Club Mitzvah” for children who are pre-Bar/Bat Mitzvah age and their parents!

We are excited to invite you to our new program designed for children 10 to 13 years of age, “Club Mitzvah”

During the year our children will be immersed in the study of Jewish history, will visit various synagogues, and will have the privilege of meeting rabbis and other community leaders, as well as be introduced to different Jewish youth organizations. At the end of the year, those who have reached Bar/Bat Mitzvah age will have the opportunity to celebrate this important milestone according to Jewish tradition.

Lessons will be conducted in English.

January 26 – Mitzvah Day with Rabbi Alpert; 9:30am at Congregation Beth David in Saratoga.

February 8 (Saturday) – Havdalah with Rabbi Joshua Berkenwald; 5:00pm at Congregation Sinai.

March 1 (Purim) – The J5K run and Purim program at the APJCC – Time TBD

April 19 – “70 Faceces of Torah” with Rabbi Mahat; 12:30pm at Temple Emanu-El in San Jose.

May 24 – “Jewish Symbols: Talit, Tefillin, and Kippah” with Rabbi Philip Ohriner; 10:00am at the APJCC.

June 6 (Saturday) – Club Mitzvah ceremony and party! 4:00pm at Congregation Shir Hadash in Los Gatos.

Cost: $250 per child for the school year.

HEDER, for children 4-9 years old

HEDER – (Hebrew Educational Extracurricular program for Russian-speaking kids) is a program designed to acquaint your children with the Jewish Culture and the Hebrew Language in an engaging learn-through-play format. The program is intended for children aged 4 -9 (split into two age groups: 4-6 years and 7-9 years) and will be conducted in Russian. We welcome, and encourage, parents to volunteer.  Additionally, as part of our program, we will celebrate Shabbat and Holidays together, inviting the community to join us in the festivities.

Please note, if your child would like to join the program in the middle of the year, we can prorate the cost to cover the remaining sessions. Contact rabbiilana@apjcc.org for more information.

We meet once a month on Sundays during the school year. 

Time: 10:00am – 12:00pm

Weekly Torah Study in Russian

Tuesdays from 10:00am-11:30am . 
Come drink tea and enjoy learning Torah with Rabbi Ilana Baird.  All ages and knowledge backgrounds are welcome.
